Our Four Words: Project

June 30, 2017

Ok, so you're Project 938.

What do you mean by “Project?"

First of all, Project is something that brings people together, it is bigger than the collected people and calls people to bring their talent, efforts, gifts, and insight into a collaborative effort that serves something beyond their own interests. It calls people together. Which is at the heart of the Greek word for church, ekklesia. Ek (out) kaleo (call). The called out ones. an Ekklesia in the ancient world would be called together to address challenges and to bring collective strength over an obstacle. Sounds like a church at its best to me. Jesus used the word to describe how his people come together

In fact, the church is Jesus’ project, not ours. He does not command us to build the church, he calls us to make disciples (Mt 28:18-20). He promises that he will be with us and that He will build his church (Mt 16:9).  As we nurture a community of discipleship, Jesus takes on the project of building his church.  It is something that is so close to his heart, it is described as His Fullness.

And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. Ephesians 2:22-23

Project is a bold word that forces people to think and ask about what kind of church we are.  It is important to know and be reminded we are God's project. Ephesians 2:10 says, “we are God’s workmanship, created for good works in Christ that he has prepared beforehand that we should do.” Philippians 1:6 says, “being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you, will carry it to completion.” It is easy in our modern world, to hear that in terms of our own spiritual development and it is a fine way to interpret this idea.  However, the original readers would have heard those words in a collective fashion. They would have instinctively considered that God was at work in them and that together, they are God’s workmanship.

Project 938 is a bold name that will protect us as a church. You can’t call yourself something that comes from the Lunatic Fringe and do the same thing as everyone else. It forces us to behave, lead and live differently. It also communicates to the next generation who may be disenchanted with the churches they have experienced that they can have hope that we will not be the tired, worn-out church-ianity over which they have lost heart. Rather, they could be caught up in something that is bigger than them, than any of us and even all of us...."the church, that is the fullness of him who fills everything in every way."
